The puffletum

Lars kept his dragon in a small hutch at the end of his bed. This was less cruel than it sounds: Lars’ mother and father had little money, and after saving every penny he was tipped by kindly uncles and red-cheeked aunts he could only afford a pygmy puffletum, which was roughly the size and shape of a jar of mayonnaise (coincidentally, its favourite food).

The puffletum was far too tubby to take off, even with its tiny propeller spinning at speed. When Lars woke at night and heard it snuffling, he wondered: was it dreaming of flying and flame?
