When Campbell and his team found Old Gromschluck in the space beneath the mountain, two facts about dragons were revised. First, that they are greedy for gold – Gromschluck’s existence was Spartan, almost; not so much as a loose penny about him. Second, that dragons’ stomachs are filled with fire. Gromschluck, when they cut him open, was blue as summer sky.
Much later, Campbell told of the tiny dragon coiled in the monster’s belly, and the smaller one inside its own, and claimed even great Gromschluck was another dragon’s hoard, if you looked big enough. Thus a scientist succumbed to religion.
