The cog

Darren was a small cog in a big machine. He rotated, gloomily, his mind on coggish things. Why were some of the other cogs so difficult to connect with? Was the world really flat? Why was he so prone to tarnishing? And what would happen if, one day, he simply Spun The Other Way?

Darren often thought about Spinning The Other Way. Some of the big rusty cogs near the centre said it had happened, once, right before Crunch Time when the world had stopped spinning and some of the cogs had vanished forever.

It only took one, Darren knew.
